HOW DO ABRASIVES WORK
Abrasives and related materials are used to smooth the surfaces of other softer materials with their constant rubbing. This smoothing, molding or finishing by employing any machine is the real action of the abrasives. The abrasives are mainly used to scratch out the surfaces of the materials and this in turn removes the unwanted roughness of the substances. The normal range of abrasives used includes pumice, sandpaper, emery and sand.
There are various applications of abrasives. This includes the cleaning of surfaces and removal of the excess coarse material such as the rough off-hand grinding, shaping with the help of the grinding and tool sharpening, sizing with the aid of precision grinding, separation with the help of slicing operations.
TYPES OF MATERIALS USED AS INDUSTRIAL ABRASIVES:
There are various types of materials used as industrial abrasives and these include:
Aluminum oxide: it is used for grinding of the plain and the alloyed steel in a very soft or hardened condition.
Silicon carbide: This is used to grind the surface of various hard materials like the cast iron, nonferrous metals and the nonmetallic materials.
Diamond: It is used for grinding of the cemented carbides, grinding of glasses, ceramics and hardened tool steel.
Cubic boron Nitrite: It is used for the grinding of the hardened steels and water resistant super alloys.
ABRASIVES SIZES:
The abrasives and its hardness on the Mohs scale include
synthetic diamond, Mohs scale hardness is 10
Boron nitride, Mohs Scale hardness is 10
Boron carbide, Mohs scale hardness is 9-10
Silicon carbide, Mohs scale hardness is 9
Alumina, Mohs scale hardness is 9
